Podcasts: good-for-your-brain snacks

If I was going to subscribe to a podcast it would probably be something from NPR: Sunday Puzzle with Will Shortz or Nancy Pearl's book reviews. I worry it would become yet another stack of something (though an electronic/virutal one) of Things I Intend to Get To Sometime Soon.

But I listen to the radio a lot and I do listen to a lot of junk on the radio. It's like junk food--it's easy to listen to because it's there. Subscribing to a podcast and downloading a podcast seems like as much work as cutting up celery and carrot sticks. But my brain would probably thank me.

We can only assume that Nancy Pearl, besides being an excellent librarian, is a really good sport.
Her action figure appears in several YouTube videos. My favorite is this one, promoting the Montana Shared Catalog. I'm not even entirely sure what the Montana Shared Catalog is, but you don't have to know to enjoy the video.

Nancy Pearl has become a celebrity, based on her ability to suggest great books for readers. Will she branch out ala Martha Stewart to audiobooks, dvds and more?

What better personal service can a library offer than helping customers match reading material to their mood?

For me, the most maddening thing about the Learning 2.0 technology is all the sign-in/user names...registering at Flickr, signing in for this or that. At first I thought it would be fun--I could make up different names and use those, but it quickly disintegrated into "Who's on First?" confusion.

Some days I have a hard enough time being me, much less an alias with an exciting 2.0 future. So I keep a manila folder with my Learning 2.0 stuff and on the inside of the folder, I have my user names/sign ins noted. Oh the irony--paper and pencil to keep the computer accounts straight.

Middle age optimist

I've spent way too much time in Flickr now, typing in names like my old hometown. It's funny to see how many other places there are with the same name. I grew up on Rainy Lake in Northern Minnesota, but there's one in Washington too I now find out.

I don't have the urge to post personal photos in Flickr, but if I had family and friends across the country/world I could see where it would be a handy thing.

And I'm grateful to whomever out there that gave me a much-needed view of Rainy Lake.

Give me a deadline

I'm most likely to try something new only when someone "forces" me to--by asking a question, giving me a deadline, or something like that. That's why I'm glad to have 23 things to try.

I'm often surprised equally surprised by things that 1) seem easy until you try them or 2) seem hard until you try them.
